Zumba for Hope Event 2013

Over 300 people got together at St. Mary Catholic Secondary School this past Wednesday for the Zumba for Hope event.  This fundraising event is a joint effort of Learning for Hope, a student-based organization led by St. Mary C.S.S. teacher Andrew McLaughlin and Zumba instructor Linda Raponi of the Harmony Center in Pickering.  The money raised from this year’s event, almost $7,000, “will be put toward the construction and equipping of an after school center for girls who are victims of abuse and human trafficking and we will buy computers, an oven, instruments and audio-visual equipment which will give those girls the chance to improve their lives,” says McLaughlin.

Now in its second year, Zumba for Hope has become the main fundraising effort of this student-based organization.  Last year the event was held for the first time ever and raised almost $4,000– almost doubling that amount this year.  Linda Raponi and her team of Zumba instructors, Melissa Donohue, Julie Eifert, Julie Fazekas, Wendy Dunn and Brampton guest Zumba instructor Miguel Martínez, got a crowd of students and members of the community all pumped and energized, moving, shimmying, jumping and sashaying  to the rhythm of upbeat dance music for almost an hour and a half, closing the night holding a raffle where they gave away several gifts donated by members of the community.

Since its inception in 2006, Learning for Hope has helped low income communities in Cusco, Perú, and they have now started programs both in El Salvador and Bolivia.  McLaughlin founded the organization with “the hopes of giving our students the opportunity to grow as Catholics and as global citizens, while at the same time improving the lives and the quality of education for underprivileged students and students with special needs in both the urban center of Cusco, as well the greater province of Cusco.”

This year, says McLaughlin, Learning for Hope opened an occupational centre in Cusco, Peru. The centre will focus on professional training for victims of human trafficking and at-risk girls from the surrounding orphanages and schools.  The two-storey building houses a beauty salon, where the girls receive training in aesthetics and also a computer lab, where the girls will learn computer and secretarial skills.  The organization hopes that at the completion of their training and when they have to leave the state institutions, the girls will be able to make a decent living. Plans are already underway to offer karate classes, Quechua language classes and many other community-building activities.

Thousands of kilometers away from Cusco, the energized and sweaty crowd of over 300 people can rest assured that even though this was such a fun, exciting and super entertaining event, what may appear to be a small gesture, giving a few dollars and a couple of hours of their time, will go a long way in helping these girls build a better future for themselves and for their community.  As Linda Raponi said, “it means a few minutes of my time, but to those it benefits, it can mean absolutely everything.  By creating change, we create a positive nurturing environment.  It gives me an opportunity to provide hope and balance, and it is my honour to be involved with Learning For Hope.”

Evento Zumba for Hope 2013
