Cultura Festival 2013

The fourth instalment of Cultura Festival took place at Mel Lastman Square every Friday in July, and the organizers saved the best for last, ending on a high note, Latin Style, on the main stage with the presentation of Amanda Martínez who brought some of her best musical creations, along with a couple of classics, to festival-goers last Friday night.

Described on the Cultura website as “A distinctive Latin jazz artist who blends musical influences including raw flamenco rhythms, Afro-Cuban beats and Mexican folk music, Amanda Martinez has captivated audiences worldwide, and performed at marquee venues including the 2010 FIFA World Cup Festivities in South Africa, Toronto’s Koerner Hall, the Montreal Jazz Festival, the National Arts Centre in Ottawa, New York’s iconic Blue Note club and many more. She has garnered a sizable amount of international acclaim thanks to her trademark warm vocals and melodies rich with her Mexican/South African heritage; in addition to being the voice of Putumayo’s Bossa Nova Around the World, Martinez toured and recorded with Juno-winning Jesse Cook, and saw multiple award nominations for her own work as well as a number-one spot on the iTunes World Music chart for her sophomore album, Amor.”

Having previously performed at Cultura a couple of years ago, this time around Amanda entertained the crowd for a little over an hour, performing some of her best known songs from her latest album and also singing a couple of world renowned classics, to the delight of the large crowd.

Joining Amanda in the closing night of Cultura 2013 were The Magnolia Brass Band and a number of buskers from the Hercinia Arts Collective, who brought a variety of entertainment and laughter to the large crowd who attended the event.  The night closed with the movie Invictus, a crowd favourite event, where people brought their blankets and chairs and enjoyed a movie at dusk under the stars.

Other performers on previous Fridays included Long Shen Dao, an innovative band that fuses eastern philosophy with reggae sounds; Brazilian percussive group Baque de Bamba; Quebec’s folk musicians La Bottine Souriante; the Woodshed Orchestra; the 60′s-influenced band Chic Gamine and the Heavyweights Brass Band.  Other films that were featured every Friday included Life of Pi, Midnight in Paris and Beasts of the Southern Wild.

The Cultura Festival is the brainchild of Toronto City Councillor John Filion in partnership with North York Arts and an initiative of Toronto Arts Foundation.  In 2012 over 20,000 people attended the free festival and this year that number was most definitely surpassed.  Other noteworthy musicians who have been part of Cultura in previous years include Suzie Vinnick, Sarv Ensemble, Havana Express, Domenic Mancuso and more.

Festival “Cultura” 2013

Ahora en su cuarto año, el festival “Cultura” se llevó a cabo cada Viernes del mes de Julio en el Mel Lastman Square. El festival cerró con broche de oro con un toque Latino, con la presentación de Amanda Martínez en el escenario principal. La noche del Viernes Amanda trajo lo mejor de su repertorio musical, incluyendo tambien un par de temas clásicos, a los espectadores.

La descripción de Amanda en la página web de “Cultura” lee: “Una artista inconfundible del jazz Latino que mezcla influencias musicales que incluyen ritmos de flamenco, Afro-Cubanos y música tradicional mexicana, Amanda Martínez ha cautivado audiencias por todo el mundo y se ha presentado en lugares tales como las festividades de la Copa del Mundo FIFA 2010 en Sudáfrica, el Koerner Hall de Toronto, el Festival de Jazz de Montreal, el National Arts Centre de Ottawa, el icónico Blue Note Club de Nueva York y muchos más. Amanda había participado anteriormente en el festival “Cultura”, y esta vez entretuvo a la audiencia por un poco más de una hora, presentando varios de sus más conocidos temas de su más reciente álbum, e incluso cantando un par de temas clásicos, para deleite de los alli presentes.

Otros participantes en la noche final de Cultura 2013 incluyeron a la Magnolia Brass Band y a varios “buskers” ó músicos/artistas ambulantes que forman parte del colectivo “Hercinia Arts Collective”, quienes brindaron al público presente con mucho entrenimiento y buen humor. La noche cerró con la presentación del largometraje “Invictus”, una de los eventos favoritos de este festival, donde las personas que atienden traen sus frazadas y sus sillas plegables y disfrutan viendo una popular película de Hollywood bajo las estrellas.

El Festival Cultura es la creación de Concejal de Toronto John Filion en asociación con el North York Arts, y una iniciativa del Toronto Arts Foundation (Fundación de Artes de Toronto). El año pasado más de 20,000 personas se hicieron presentes a este festival que es totalmente gratuito, y este año ese número fue definitivamente superado.
