While celebrating Mother’s Day, ASOGUATE is saddened by Guatemalan tragedy

Note & Photos: Francisco Reyes TORONTO.- ASOGUATE, the Guatemalan-Canadian Association, celebrated Mother’s Day in advance, but not forgetting the recent tragedy of the fire of Mercado La Terminal on March 25th, which destroyed over a thousand small businesses and burned to the ground the PENNAT building– the facilities for the educational project for working children that ASOGUATE supports financially.

The Mother’s Day celebration took place last Saturday, May 3rd, at the St. Phillip Neri church hall. It was a fundraising event seeking to collect funds for their educational and cultural projects, here in Canada and in the Central American country. More than a hundred people attended and all the mothers in the audience received a red rose. They were also treated to the beautiful and romantic melodies of local singer Edgar Díaz– songs he specifically hand-picked for this special occasion. Omar Cano, president of ASOGUATE, emphasized the importance of the event, pointing out that the ultimate goal of this event was to collect funds to continue supporting specific projects, as is the mandate of the organization, in order to promote unity, integration, solidarity and the comprehensive development of the Guatemalan community in Canada. In a short conversation we held at the event, Cano highlighted some of the projects the organization supports monetarily in Guatemala, with events held throughout the year like the Mother’s Day celebration taking place that night. He lamented the tragedy caused by the fire at Mercado La Terminal, which obliterated the PENNAT building, leaving dozens of kids without a locale for them to hold their daily lessons. He appealed to Torontonians’ good will so they can continue supporting the organization and eventually can build on a new location for the important non-profit organization. Last Thursday, May 1st, during the Labour Day celebration, PENNAT members of the board of directors and the students participated in a march that culminated at the Guatemalan Ministry of Education, asking the government for support for the children who lost their building and therefore the opportunity for education in the fire. Up to this point the corresponding authorities have been unresponsive to their pleas. PENNAT children work in small businesses from 7:00 to 11:00 in the morning, helping out their parents or working on their own. After their shifts, they attend school in the afternoon– but this routine has come to a halt because of their lack of a location. In the next few weeks ASOGUATE will announce a larger fundraising event in order to collect funds to help the children of PENNAT get a new location. The project is in its initial planning stage and it will be announced through ASOGUATE’s website soon.

En medio de homenaje a las madres, ASOGUATE lamenta gran tragedia

Nota y Fotos: Francisco Reyes TORONTO.- La Asociación guatemalteca canadiense (ASOGUATE) celebró por adelantado el Día de las Madres, sin dejar de recordar la tragedia del incendio del Mercado La Terminal, el pasado 25 de marzo en ciudad Guatemala, que destruyó más de mil pequeños negocios y arrasó con las instalaciones de PENNAT, un proyecto educativo para niños obreros, que dicha asociación apoya con recursos financieros. El homenaje a las madres tuvo lugar el pasado sábado 3 de mayo en los salones parroquiales de la Iglesia San Felipe Neri, con la finalidad de recaudar fondos para sus proyectos educativos y culturales tanto en Canadá como en el país centroamericano. El evento, al que asistieron más de cien personas, se caracterizó por la entrega de una rosa roja a las madres asistentes y por la presentación en vivo del cantante Edgar  Díaz, quien deleitó a los presentes con hermosas canciones románticas escogidas para la ocasión. El presidente de la asociación, Omar Cano, destacó la importancia del evento, precisando que el fin último de la actividad era recabar recursos financieros para cumplir con proyectos específicos de acuerdo con los objetivos de ASOGUATE, de promover la unidad, la integración, la solidaridad y el desarrollo integral de la comunidad guatemalteca en Canadá. En entrevista con este redactor, Cano se refirió a algunos de los proyectos que la asociación tiene en Guatemala, con apoyo financiero de recaudaciones, que como la del Día de las Madres, realizan en Canadá. Deploró la tragedia causada por el incendio en el Mercado La Terminal, que redujo a cenizas las instalaciones de PENNAT, dejando a decenas de niños sin local para recibir docencias y apeló a la buena voluntad de los ciudadanos para que contribuyan con aportes monetarios para construir un nuevo local de esa ONG guatemalteca. El pasado jueves 1 de mayo, en la celebración del Día Internacional del Trabajo, los directivos de PENNAT y los niños docentes realizaron una marcha que desembocó en el Ministerio de Educación de Guatemala para pedir al gobierno que acuda en ayuda de aquellos niños obreros privados de la enseñanza, debido al incendio. Hasta el momento, las autoridades correspondientes se han mostrado indiferentes a los reclamos. Los niños de PENNAT trabajan en los pequeños negocios de 7 a 11 de la mañana, ayudando a sus padres o de manera individual. Después de la jornada laboral asisten a sus labores educativas, que en este momento están suspendidas por falta de local. En los próximos días se dará a conocer un proyecto amplio de recaudación de fondos para ayudar a los niños que reciben el pan de la educación en PENNAT. Esa campaña está en su fase de diseño y será lanzada a través de la página de internet de ASOGUATE.
