Alma Latina Top 10 Golden Globes 2016 Moments

There is always the expectation that something will go wrong– terribly wrong– at the annual Golden Globes ceremony. How can it not? Movie and television A-Listers kicking off award season in a relaxed ceremony that takes place in a banquet hall and includes dinner and booze. Oh, and this year hosted (miraculously) once again by British bad boy of comedy Ricky Gervais. How he gets invited to host is a mystery to me. Well, it’s not really: bad behaviour + a tipsy bad boy host = Great TV ratings. And as expected Gervais kicked off the night in his own unique, mean and totally irreverent style. And he tops Alma Latina’s list of 10 Top Golden Globes moments from last night at the 73rd Annual Golden Globes Awards.

* Ricky Gervais Opening Monologue: It was as irreverent and offensive (and profanity-laced) as you expected him to be. But he was funny. And he didn’t make all those well dressed A-listers twitch uncomfortably in their seats for the world to see as much as he’s done in the past. (Clip courtesy of YouTube/NBC)

* Rachel Bloom accepts the award for Best Actress in a TV Series, Comedy or Musical: “Oh my God! Oh, my God! Guys, guys, I’m just going to talk to you like it’s people.” How can this opening line not become a memorable moment?! She won the Best Actress award for her leading role in “Crazy Ex-Girlfriend”. (Clip courtesy of YouTube/NBC)

* Just clarifying to the Golden Globe powers-that-be that there is more than one Latina actress in Hollywood: Eva Longoria and America Fererra joke about Latina actresses at Golden Globes. (Clip courtesy of OnDemandEntertainment/Foreign Hollywood Press Association)

* Viola Davis’ Gown: Love Viola Davis to pieces, but what on earth was she wearing?! This moment is memorable because I think a new galaxy was discovered in that dress. It literally was Out of This World!

* Sylvester Stallone Wins his first Golden Globe: Almost 40 years after he was nominated for a Golden Globe, he finally takes one home. The audience was delighted to hear his name when the award for Best Performance by an actor in a Supporting Role for “Creed” was announced. He managed to thank his imaginary friend “Rocky Balboa” but somehow failed to thank his co-star Michael B. Jordan and Director Ryan Coogler.

* A visibly tipsy (maybe a little more than tipsy) Quentin Tarantino accepts the award for Best Original Score – Motion Picture on behalf of Ennio Morricone. Hilarious! (Clip courtesy of YouTube/NBC)

* BFFs Comedian Amy Schumer and actress Jennifer Lawrence introduce each “Joy” and “Trainwreck” at the 73rd Annual Golden Globes. (Clip courtesy of OnDemandEntertainment/Foreign Hollywood Press Association)

* Gael García Bernal Wins his First Golden Globe: There were a lot of firsts last night, but for Mexican actor Gael García Bernal winning his first Golden Globe (Best Actor – TV Series/Comedy) for his role in Mozart in the Jungle the emotion was incredibly raw and genuine. He even managed to curse in Spanish without being censored. “Thank you for all the team of Mozart in the Jungle. You guys are my family, cabrones.” Too funny. (Clip courtesy of YouTube/NBC)

* Ricky Gervais / Mel Gibson very uncomfortable encounter: If you know what happened at the 2011 Golden Globes, there’s no need to explain, just watch the clip. If you don’t, good luck trying to find the clip of the comedian (I still cringe remembering the moment) following the humiliating moment when he made fun of the star at the 2011 Golden Globes with jokes about his alcohol consumption and anti-semitic remarks.

* Leonardo Dicaprio accepts the award for Best Actor in a Motion Picture, Drama: After so many deservedly masterful performances that couldn’t garner him not just a Golden Globe but many Oscars as well in the past, Leo finally wins the coveted statuette, and he graciously accepted (to the standing ovation of a roaring audience) the accolade on behalf of “all the First Nations peoples represented in this film and all the indigenous communities around the world. It is time that we recognize your history and that we protect your indigenous lands from corporate interests and people who are out there to destroy them.” It was such a great moment. (Clip courtesy of YouTube/NBC)
